Tomato Salan (A variation of mirchi ka salan)

Last weekend invited few guests for dinner and tried this variation of mirchi ka salan using Tomato. I got this idea from Vahchef site. Thanks to Vahchef.
My friends loved this recipe so thought of sharing with you all.
Here is the recipe for the same.

Ingredients:
  • 6 Tomatoes
  • 1/4th cup of peanuts
  • 2tbsp of sesame seeds
  • 1tbsp of dry coconut powder(You can use fresh coconut instead of dry coconut powder)
  • 1/2 inch Cinnamon
  • 2 cloves
  • 2 elachi/cardamom
  • 1tbsp jeera/cumin seeds
  • 1tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2tsp red chili powder (Adjust as per your spice)
  • 1tsp coriander powder
  • pinch of turmeric powder
  • 1/2tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 onion chopped finely
  • 3-4 green chilies(optional)
  • 1/4 th small lemon sized tamarind pulp(use less tamrind since tomatoes also gives sour taste)
  • 1tsp sugar
  • salt to taste
  • 2-3tbsp oil

Preparation:

First cut the tomatoes on the top(think like removing the cap of a bottle) and remove the pulp/seeds using spoon. Keep the pulp/seeds aside. Make a paste of pulp and green chilies.
Roast peanuts, sesame seeds and coconut powder together and make it fine paste in blender. Heat a pan add oil, whole garam masala Cinnamon,cloves,jeera/cumin) once jeera splatter then add ginger garlic paste, chopped onions. Once the onions turns little golden color add turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, red chili powder and keep it for 5-6mts mixing occasionally.

Now add the tomato sauce which was made using the pulp. Stir for 2 mts and add peanut-sesame-coconut sauce to the mixture. Add tamarind pulp, sugar and salt. Cook 5-6mts by stirring it occasionally.

Once the gravy starts boiling add the tomatoes and fill the tomatoes with gravy. Cook for 5 mts in low heat. This will allow tomatoes to be cooked using hot gravy .Don't cook too much then the tomatoes becomes too soft. It will be good if the tomatoes are served as whole so cook till they are not raw and not too soft.

Garnish with chopped coriander and serve with rotis or rice(This curry is good with Jeera rice, Biryani or chapathis). Enjoy this delicious curry.
